A
NOTE ABOUT LPs
LPs make especially
valuable acquisitions for your music library because copies
have become increasingly scarce, and offer many compositions and performances
that are still not available on compact disc. Additionally, analog recordings
generally have greater sonic depth than digital recordings.
BECAUSE LP ALBUMS ARE
BIGGER THAN MY SCANNER BED,
THE SCANNED IMAGE DOES NOT SHOW THE FULL LP COVER
PUT YOUR LP MUSIC ON CDs!
Simply hook up a turntable containing a pre-amp to your PC and record your LP
music to your hard disk.
Then burn the music files to CDs. With music editing software, you can even
reduce the surface noise!

TRACK LISTING FOLLOWS THE U.I. BAND INFORMATION BELOW:
Over the years the
University of Illinois Symphonic Band has established
itself as one of the finest collegiate ensembles ever put together, performing
at the highest level in every aspect of musicianship and artistic performance,
creating a lasting legacy in the annals of the recorded wind band repertoire.
This album is a rare find from the 1950s, a title
that is out of print from the University
of Illinois catalog, and has not been available from the university for a long
time.
Words
alone cannot describe the tremendous contribution to the concert band field
and the legacy of recorded band music made by the University of Illinois band
program.
A long tradition of outstanding conductors and fine musicians has continued to
this day,
where the University of Illinois Symphonic Band remains perhaps the leading
collegiate
ensemble in the world, continuing an epic series of professional-level
performances that
defines the literature of band music and serves as the model for others to
follow.
A few of the selections in this series are not recorded anywhere else.
What
follows is a brief history of the UI band program, covering the time span of the
LP recordings. If
you don't want to read further, simply scroll down to this album's program,
given below this history.
Witness what
two very famous band conductors have said
about the UI concert band over the years:
""...world's greatest band."
---John Philip Sousa, 1920s
" Second to none...finest of all concert
bands."
---Edwin Franko Goldman, 1950s
And more recent comments about the band,
covering the performances heard in this LP series:
"I have never heard such professional
playing and sheer musicianship from any band"
"I know of no other band that could have
played so much difficult music so well."
"One can easily see why the University of
Illinois bands continue
to lead the nation in cultural attainment."
The tradition began shortly after the
opening of the university in 1868, when a military band was formed.
The military band evolved into a concert band and in 1890 performed its first
formal concert.
The first in a long line of fine conductors
was Albert Austin Harding, who for 43 years guided the
program and developed it into a position of national prominence. Later Harding
was named honorary
life president of both the College Band Directors National Association and the
American Bandmasters
Association, honors reflecting the considerable influence he had on his peers in
shaping the direction of
collegiate band music and in improving ensemble performance standards. The
university's "Harding
Band Building," dedicated in 1958, is named in tribute to this icon of college
band music.
The next great influential conductor was the
legendary Mark Hindsley, who from 1948 to 1970 guided
the program to even greater heights and launched the famous recording series
that stands today as the
longest ongoing series in the field. Hindsley not only conducted the concert
band, but over the years
created many brilliant transcriptions of music from the standard orchestral
repertoire, and recorded them
with his band. Most of these transcriptions are still performed today by bands
worldwide.
Harry Begian became conductor in 1970, and
continued the grand tradition with large ensemble, trend-setting
performances. Under his leadership and interpretive style his symphonic bands
achieved the sound of a full
symphony orchestra, resulting in a sequence of especially brilliant recordings.
Today, the Begian performances
are regarded as classics every bit as much as the Hindley performances are.
In 1985, upon the retirement of Harry Begian,
renowned composer James Curnow took over as interim
conductor, soon to be succeeded by James F. Keene. These two conductors
recorded the last of the LPs.
Not long after, the band turned to cassette tapes, and then to CDs in making
recordings.
The LP era was over, but the legacy continues, and the University Illinois is
continuing to release
recordings of great impact, precious gifts to the world of recorded concert
band literature.

OTHER INTERNATIONAL
BUYING INFORMATION
Many of my lighter-weight listings have flat-rate
international shipping options
in the drop-down menu. For these items, you can pay right away with PayPal.
But if an international shipping cost is NOT indicated,
you will need email me
prior to buying so I can weigh the item(s). I will
then email you back
with the shipping options and their costs. When you buy, I will
add these costs in your invoice to make payment easy.
PLEASE NOTE THAT SHIPPING MULTIPLE HEAVIER ITEMS
INTERNATIONALLY, SUCH AS BOOKS, IS NOW VERY
EXPENSIVE,
USUALLY TOO COSTLY TO ORDER MORE THAN ONE AT A TIME.
That's because for heavier items, the newest U.S. postal rates have eliminated
the cheaper
economy & seamail shipping options in favor of the more expensive
1st Class International & International Priority Mail shipping classes.
Large orders over 4 pounds must be sent via expensive International Priority
Mail
---there are no other options at that weight.
Lighter items ideal for international simultaneous multiple
purchases include CDs, DVDs,
cassette tapes, comics, etc., and up to 2-3 LPs at at time.
50 CENTS PER ADDITIONAL ORDERED ITEM SHIPPING
DISCOUNT
DOES NOT APPLY TO INTERNATIONAL ORDERS.
I can usually offer multiple-purchase shipping discounts on international items
when
they are purchased at the same time. But due to the wide weight range of items
in my inventory,
and the cost variance to different worldwide destinations, I do not show
flat-rate multiple item discounts in the
international shipping section---it's far too complex to do so. However, I will
apply custom-determined
combined shipping discounts on an individual basis and include them in your
invoice.
