Up for auction is an unusual antique single-drawer cabinet on spindle legs. I’m not sure what this piece was originally used for – to store a Bible, valuable documents, or maybe even flatware. It is wonderfully constructed with handmade dovetails, pegged design on top and turned knobs and spindle legs. The finish is original, the patina is warm and golden and the wear is limited to some scratches on the top. Overall, the condition is wonderful. Its dimensions are 20-1/8” wide x 13-3/4” deep x 9” high. The maker’s label is inside the drawer: S. B. Regester, Designer, Manufacturer & Dealer in Walnut and Cottage Furniture; No 526 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia. I’ve researched and found ads for this business in the Philadelphia Friends’ Intelligencer. The ad from 1874 (pictured) refers to the business as S. B. Regester and the ad looks very similar to the label inside the piece. An earlier ad from 1871 (pictured) refers to the business as Regester & Hopkins and discusses the buy-out of a partner business interest. I found a patent application from 1897 (pictured) indicating that S.B. Regester was deceased. This dates the piece to 1874 - 1897.ket 450999130 |
