Many of the fellows in my section especially the younger ones are going to return to the states. .... I don't know what to do .... if I stay here I would like to go into the American Aviation. So far our section has made good in this division and we have a good chance to make honors." , (3) 3 pages in ink on Oct 2, 1917.. "We are back at the front and about to have an interesting time. I had a ride in a tank this morning ... would like to bring a tank home for Aunt to drive because you don't have to look out for the trees. ... Harvey and I have the Fiat all fixed up for some hard running. ... I took a trip behind the lines the other day and met a bunch of American soldiers they could not believe when I told them that I had just come from the front. ...." ,  (4) 1 page completely filled in front and back written on Dec 12, 1917 "... Received the package, fountain pen, knit helmet very much in need of these articles. ... still have hope to see England .... there is a chance that we may be sent to Italy if not I am sure we will see action near here soon. " ,  (5) 3 pages completely filled in written on Dec. 21, 1917 "... We are allowed to carry any amount of luggage we care too, that is one of the nice features of this service. I have an iron bed with springs I swiped out of one of the hospitals. ... George and I both enjoy the Missouri society notes. ... We never come into contact with any YMCA contingent but no doubt are doing good work. They certainly have a bunch of Willey Boys. .." (6)  2 pages completely filled in written on Jan 14, 1918 " ... Just received our first letter to our new address,  this new number 636. ... I've received several testaments and the boys of the section have drawn the conclusion that I must have been a pretty bad boy in the United States. ... " ,  (7) 2 pages written on Jan. 22, 1918  " We are at the front again but in a generally quiet sector, ... We have a large brick barracks for sleeping and living in ... I just returned from duty at the front and found it comfortable and quiet there. ...". (8) 1 page in ink dated March 8 1918. " ... It was kind of the field service to send you the literature ... you should also receive a certificate from them stating that I volunteered my services, it should include my Croix de Guerre citation, ... Our French General promised us a visit today ...."  (9) 3 page in ink March 24, 1918 " .... As you already know activity all along the front I spent the past two days at a new post, an aviation field where we lived with the French Pilots. ... We keep one of our cars there to go out and get those who happen to fall. ... You misunderstood me when I mentioned our Lt. who was a French instructor at Cornell, he came over in the field service and has been in charge of the section. ... we are now one man to a car since we have Fords. You asked if we are near Americans, we are perfectly satisfied in the French and the longer we can keep away from the American rules and Army regulations the better. But we also have a French Lt and French S Non coms, they all speak English perfectly. ... I know have a large collection of pictures taken by the different men of the section. .... We are all packed up and waiting for orders to leave. ... "  (10) May 19. two pages in ink. " ... The Boches have been disterbing our sleep these moonlit nights with airraids, fortunately we are not in a very important place. ... but the villagers all around us have been targets for the bombs, we are in the reserves a few miles behind the lines and expect to see more action soon. ... " (11) June 1918 3 pages in ink. " ... For the past month we have been up against the toughest job we have ever struck for when the battle front moves from the old established line and the fighting becomes open we lose the protection of the trenches and caves. ... I drove on slowly through the dense forest until I reached a point just a few hours before had been about a mile and half behind our first line. The French were lying in a ditch along side the road by their machine guns. It was fairly quiet at that time, I got down in the ditch and asked one of the men where the present front line was. He said it's right here. Well I was somewhat surprised but even more so a moment later when someone gave the warning and all the machine guns opened fire. I looked ahead into the forest and saw a number of the enemy advancing dodging from tree to tree, keeping under cover. They were on three sides of us... the Germans were returning the fire, we could hear the bullets whizzing and see little puffs of dust when they struck the road. .... The Boche did everything except carve their initials in the side of my car with machine gun bullets. .... One year ago today that just about this time I was sitting in a deck chair on the Rochambeau watching the Statue of Liberty grow smaller and smaller. ..." , (12) 5 pages in ink July 2 1918 Knights of Columbus Stationary. (13) July 25, one page in ink. (14) 3 pages in ink. July 4th. "... Perhaps you have heard at this time that I have had another streak of luck. A French Officer at an advanced post thought my action deserved mention so he asked my name to be sent into headquarters for a second citation for the Croix de Geurre. This is a better citation than the one I received in Oct. This one entitles to wear two stars on the ribbon with the cross. .... The decorations take place this evening but the citations will be sent to the American Headquarters .... " ( typed copy of the citation was in the envelope). (15) 1 page June 12. " ... Our division has done very well regardless of the odds against it. Losses have been very heavy on both sides. ... the French are certainly pleased with the American Spirit. ..." (16) Oct. 1st 2 pages in Ink, (17) Oct. 1st 3 pages in ink. (18) Nov. 4th 2 pages in pencil. ".. We formed a new section (18) The germans seemed to offer very little resistance now. ..." (19)  Thanksgiving day 5 pages in Pencil. (20) Dec. 11th, 4 pages in pencil (21) Dec. 22, 3 pages in ink. (22) Jan. 29 1919, 2 pages in ink. (23) Jan. 10 1919, 2 pages in ink.  There is also a newspaper clipping showing a picture of Fred announcing his sailing for France with the Missouri Univerity unit of the American Ambulance Field Service.  There are also two newspaper clippings about Dr. La Rue, Fred must have served with him and must have known his family.  Most of the letters have envelopes.  There are 3 envelopes with no letters?   These letters are full of interesting information on an Americans experience in the Ambulance service during WW1.    Please visit our ebay store!
