THE MEDAL MEASURES 1 1/2 INCHES DIAMETER SOLID HEAVY
The obverse features an eagle in a bamboo forest. Around the top border appears the lettering "MISSING WHILE SERVING IN THE DEFENSE OF FREEDOM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA" and at the lower border "POW * MIA." The reverse features the Vietnam Service Medal symbolically lying on a surface ready for the recipient to claim it. The inscriptions "YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN" appears in the upper left field and "BY ACT OF CONGRESS SEPTEMBER 1983" in the lower right field of the medal. The words "HONORING AMERICANS STILL MISSING" appear around the top border; the year 1961 (first missing POW/MIA) appears on the left border with the year 1973 (year cease fire began) on the right border; "VIETNAM * LAOS * CAMBODIA" appears at the lower border.
