This
book covers the entire American steam maritime scene with special
coverage of the Hudson River and Long Island Sound waterways, with
their many steamboat lines. One of the most valuable features of
this book is the full quotation of original sources. Documents of
various kinds, letters, time schedules, daily newspaper notices, and
advertisements are given. Details of vessel dimensions, changing
passenger fares, steam pressure measurements, speed and accident
records, lighthouses, etc., are included in profusion.
Personal yarns told to the author by captains are included to add to
the interest of the book:
• Read about how the "New Orleans" steamboat (built in 1811) outran the
Chickasaw Indians on the Ohio River.
• Read about the excitement and the race from New Orleans to St. Louis
in 1870 between the 'Natchez" and the "Robert E Lee."
• Read about the 1880 collision between the 'Stonington' and the
'Narragansett', sister ships.
• and many more!
There are over 50 pen-and-ink drawings, many full page, by marine
artist Samuel Ward Stanton, who went down with the Titanic. Some
notable photographs are also included.
A fascinating book filled with extensive factual material that is hard
to find anywhere else. This book is rich in steamship lore and has been
the foundation for much of the maritime writing of the early 1900s.
