Robert Peary was a remarkable man whose courage and determination will always be a source of inspiration. To this day no one has even attempted to duplicate his amazing (and dangerous) 1,000 mile round trip dash over the arctic ocean to the Pole and back to land.

Peary was first and foremost an engineer whose talent was rewarded by a US Navy commission won through a national competition. After working on the Panama canal he turned his life's work to reaching the North Pole. Noting the failures of all previous attempts Peary engineered the clothing, food, sledges, traveling methods and much more. Peary designed a ship with a 2-foot thick hull that was a essentially a wooden icebreaker capable of reaching the Arctic Ocean. His 1917 book "Secrets of Polar Travel" became a reference text on living and traveling in temperatures of 50 degrees below zero.

Peary became the target of hatred from a hoaxer, Fred Cook, whom he exposed as a fraud. Cook spent years traveling across America with vaudeville shows in which he "exposed Peary" as a fraud and revealed himself as the true hero of the North Pole. Cook's traveling show was publicly condemned in Congress in 1915 and by 1923 Cook was in Federal Prison for mail fraud. Cook's daughter, Janet Vetters, used her father's ill gotten mail fraud funds to launch a trans-generational vendetta against Peary. She incorporated the "Cook Society", funded with over $1,000,000, to provide assistance and even cash to numerous authors who wrote anti-Peary books. One of these even managed to become popular with an unsophisticated public.

The South Pole was reached almost effortlessly by a Norwegian team using Peary's dog sledge relay team method.

The Englishman Robert Scott killed his entire polar team through exhaustion and malnutrition after eschewing Peary's dog team system. 
These deliberate attacks against Peary's North Pole achievement were exposed as completely false through recent release of evidence such as Peary's ocean depth measurements—which have been verified by submarine; independent proof that his traveling speeds can be achieved even by first timers; and finally by overexposed photos with the sun visible in the frame. Never used by Peary, these photos provide proof positive because the suns angle is perfectly consistent with having been taken at 90 degrees north. Nevertheless, the vendetta set in motion by the hoaxer Cook through his daughter, has perhaps "perverted American History" as was feared by Congressman Fess back in 1915.

The life achievement of Peary is impressive to anyone who takes the time to learn of his engineering and leadership skills. The outrageously false attacks against Peary by a non-profit organization make him all the more noble. Peary was a fearless man who refused to fail. He spent his life suffering to be the first human ever to reach an axis of the Earth. In 1909 that was as fantastic to the world as was reaching the surface of the moon was 60 years later.
