raffia dyed brilliant colors in a geometric design. Basket
has a loop for hanging.

About the Artist
Uganda is an
agrarian culture with most crafts made from vegetable matter
including raffia grass and fiber from the banana plant. The
women of the country are often the breadwinners of the
family and spend much of their day weaving baskets to sell
in the local and international markets. Their profits from
the sale of crafts are used to provide the basics for their
families, including food, health care and education.
Uganda Crafts 2000
Ltd. is a Ugandan-owned Fair Trade Craft wholesaler that
provides employment and training for the disadvantaged,
particularly women, youth, the disabled and those living
with HIV/AIDS. As a member of IFAT, the International Fair
Trade Association, Uganda Crafts 2000 Ltd. ensures that the
craftspeople are paid a sustainable wage for their work.
The rural women of
Uganda spend free moments between child-rearing, planting
and harvesting their land, and feeding their families
weaving tightly woven baskets to earn income. The women are
still amazed that people around the world want to own
baskets reflecting colors and patterns so prevalent in their
daily lives.
