Synopsis
In this memoir, Ashley Smith recalls the fateful day in March 2005 when she became the hostage, for several hours, of Brian Nichols, who was fleeing a courthouse shooting in which he had killed several officials. Smith became famous for having calmed Nichols down by reading to him from pastor Rick Warren's bestseller, THE PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE, after which he let her go. Though her experiences have been the subject of books and articles, UNLIKELY ANGEL is her own perspective on the events, and it tells what happened to Smith afterwards. A woman of faith who admits she has not led an exemplary life, Smith forthrightly reveals that she kept a stash of crystal meth, and provided some to Nichols to calm him down. Her hostage experience, Smith claims, was the wake-up call she needed, and in UNLIKELY ANGEL she writes about how she changed her life afterwards.
