How Lincoln Cents Are Made ...
Unplated Zinc Cent Planchet & Struck Coin

A "raw" blank is punched from a long coil of zinc strip like a cookie cut out from rolled out dough. It is then sent through an upset mill (or rimmer) which raises (or upsets) the edge of the rim creating a sort of basining effect.  This concentrates enough metal at the rim to aid in the formation of the raised rim during striking, (without having to use undue pressure).  It also removes most burrs and aids in the delivery of the planchet to the striking chamber by reducing friction.  It is then washed and then "barrel plated" with copper.  After copper plating it is considered a "planchet" ready for striking and is delivered to the U.S. Mint for transformation into a coin.  What we offer here is one of the unplated planchets along with a struck coin.
