A three page document signed R. F. Snow by his attorney Dudley C. Bates - Thomas Spencer and Charles Spencer who was later made Minister of the Interior. Printed on blue paper it states in part "This charter party, made and concluded upon in Honolulu H.I. the twenty second day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine Between B.F. Snow agent for the owners of the Bark "Bhering" of Boston Mass of the burthen of three hundred and forty tons...now lying in the harbor of Honolulu of the first part, and Thomas Spencer of the second part...for a voyage from Honolulu H.I. to New Bedford or Fairhaven at the election of the party of the second part...Cargo of Oil Bones, Hides and other lawful merchandise...to pay...the sum of Two Thousand Three hundred Dollars ($2300.00). The party of the first part to furnish all dunnage of a suitable kind for the storing of oil, to receive the cargo of the ship tackles and to sign Bills of Lading at any required rate of freight..."| A rare insight into the business of whaling here in the islands in the 19th century, this museum piece like all of our auctions is being listed without any reserve so good luck and be sure to check out our other early whaling items and rare pieces of Hawaiiana.
