Presented to you today is a superb NGC Gem MS65 Morgan Dollar from the Philadelphia mintage of 1881 with a full, crisp strike throughout both sides of the coin with original mint luster. The fields are pristine and virtually untouched while the surfaces exhibit bright luster with a wonderful cartwheel shine. Take a look at the picture above to get a feel for the coin's eye-appeal.

 

Only a small fraction of Morgans from the 1881 Philadelphia mintage have survived the years of circulation and recurring bullion melts. Collectors tend to hang on to Gem MS65+ examples, and this is truly one of the nicest MS65s I've ever handled. According to the latest NGC Census Report, only 47 pieces have received an MS66 grade and only 4 were graded higher making the specimen offered here one of the best surviving examples of its kind!

 

The recently updated Coin World Trends shows a value of $1,000 for the 1881 Morgan in MS65 grade; compare that with the MS66 which commands 5 times that value at $5,000 and you can see that this premium MS65 example is a great bargain with tremendous upside potential:
