You are looking at a very rare copy of "Gleanings in Africa". Actually the full title is "Gleanings in Africa; exhibiting a Faithful and Correct View of the Manners and Customs of the Inhabitants of the Cape of Good Hope and Surrounding Country. With a Full and Comprehensive Account of the System of Agriculture Adopted by the Colonists: Soil, Climate, Natural Productions etc. interspersed with Observations and Reflections on the STATE OF SLAVERY in the Southern Extremity of the African Continent. Illustrated throughout with wonderful full page engravings. The book measures 8.25 inches by 5.25 inches and is 320 pages in length. Published in London by James Cundee at the Albion Press, 1806. 8vo, original mottled calf, hinges strained. folding aquatint frontis is missing but all other plates are present, as called for. Binding is still tight. Pages show moderate foxing throughout though pages are strong and free of tears or brittleness. Britain had controlled the Cape from 1795 to 1803, primarily to keep it out of the hands of Napoleon, who had seized the United Provinces of the Netherlands. The text takes the form of letters home from a serving army officer. The year of publication Britain seized it again. All in all, a very nice copy of a really scarce book. Please feel free to email with any questions. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding.................................
