A very large, rare and well preserved Prehistoric Fossilized skull of a Hyracodon, dating to the Oligocene period, approximately 32-23 Million years ago.
The Hyracodon is an extinct mammalian species, often described as something akin to a, hornless, running Rhinoceros, but bearing similarities to modern-era horses. The Oligocene period was characterized by a recession of the rainforests from much of our planet, resulting in the creation of steppes (large plains of grassland). These steppes suited creatures that could graze and travel large distances to find fertile land, leading to the evolution of species such as the Hyracodon.
This example is well preserved in a chalky matrix. The dentition, often partially lost, its well shown here. The piece originates from a private German collection and was found in the Whiteriver badlands, Wyoming, USA in the 1960's.
