A brief history of Victorian Era hardware:

With the Industrial Revolution came a demand for new hardware styles and techniques. As traditional fabrication methods were replaced by less expensive methods of production, brass and bronze were used extensively. Elaborate hardware for the average home was popularized by Charles Eastlaske's book, "Hints on House Hold Taste." As household electricity and central heating became more prevalent, the interest in unique hardware for the home grew--items of particular interest included cabinet knobs, bin pulls, decorative door knobs, switch plate covers, and push-button electrical switches.
