CUNARD LINE ADVERTISING

PRESENTED is a large size original advertisement by an unknown artist of a Cunard Lines twin stack steam ship. The black and white ad was commissioned by Cunard after it made a joint service arrangement with Anchor-Donaldson Lines starting in 1919. The paper on which the ad was printed has been folded in four with each fold being approximately 6" W x 7 3/8" T. We can only speculate that it was folded to be distributed as a Direct Mail piece since the overall size of 12 1/2" W x 15" T is too large for most period magazines.

Large advertisements such as this were typical of the type of promotional advertising done in that era. The paper has a gloss to it and we have not inspected it outside the frame whose overall dimensions are 17" W x 20 1/4" H.

POSTER ART: is discussed in the the book "Nautical Antiques & Collectables, by Jon Baddeley, Sotheby's Publications, 1993, page 136. At the time Mr. Baddeley was a long term employee of Sotheby's and had established their Collector's Department in 1975. He has since moved over to Bonham's, one of three of the major English auction houses, and heads their Nautical Department. Note the direction of the ships is reversed.

CONDITION: The paper shows some wear at the folds which indicates it was folded and unfolded many times. It is generally in excellent condition except that the frame has some small chips where white shows through the black paint.  We haven't attempted to to touch it up since many people prefer the marks of age.

Ascania, Antonia, Ausonia – now travel the CUNARD HIGHWAY to Channel Ports from New York and disembark passengers in London itself.  Passengers for Paris and the Continent are landed directly at the pier at Havre – only three short hours from Paris.

TOURIST THIRD CABIN .. A CUNNARD INNOVATION

After May 1st, this new service will provide exclusive tourist third cabin accommodations at the extremely low round trip rate of $170, making a trip to Europe cost but little more than an ordinary vacation.

The Sign of the Times, now, as eighty-six years ago, points to Cunard as the world’s highway from America to Europe.  The romance of the sea, its glories and traditions, are all typified by the word “Cunard”.  It is a name that stands for the staunch service of hundreds of ships, thousands of men, millions in capital.  To countless Atlantic travelers their Cunard passage remains the fondest of memories, a dream of happy relaxation, an epic of swift, untroubled transportation.  Write for information and illustrated booklets.

A WORD ABOUT ADVERTISING ART:

In 1963, workmen found hundreds of Toulouse-Lautrec posters rolled up under the floor of a Parisian building that was being remodeled. The ones in the best condition could be bought for a few hundred dollars. Even in the 1970s, copies of Lautrec’s Divan Japonais, ere being sold for $800 each.

Today these posters sell for $25,000 and more. In 1989, Toulouse-Lautrec’s 3-sheet Moulin Rouge sold for $220,000, at the time,  the highest price ever paid for a fine art adverting poster at auction.

When the market for vintage advertising posters emerged in the late 1970s,  the attention focused on French artists like Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, and Jules Cheret. Advertising Posters from these artists, and those from the Art Deco period, brought the highest prices.

As the market has matured, however, it has also broadened. Italian, Swiss, Russian, Dutch, German, and British advertising art has developed into specialties with prices that have risen steadily in the last decade. The market has also strengthened Today, such works can be found that range from a few hundred dollars to thousands.
