You are bidding on an old oil railroad lantern manufactured in London. The red metal is stamped Dorking. This is a railway station in Surrey. Dorking first had a railway line to London in the mid 1800's.
DESCRIPTION :
The font comes out of the unit. The font slides onto a rod which holds it in place. The lantern and font have the manufacture’s name.The lantern(outer body) has a metal plate in the bottom. This plate can come out. The plate has holes in it which would enable one to remove the font and bolt the piece in place. Then replacing the font and closing the lantern. The lantern is hinged and has a lock down clip. There is a notch and a slide of some sort along the top with a wing nut. I don’t know the purpose of this. The lantern has a Fresnel on one side and a round lens on the other. On each vertical side of the Fresnel is a shield with holes in. I am unsure of the purpose. The top opens allowing the lantern to be lit either from the top or front. There is a paper label on the lens and on the top. The top label is from a gallery.
CONDITION : (At the bottom of this listing are additional photos. These will provide you with a better idea of the condition of this piece.)
The lantern is very nice but does have its blemishes. One of the ribs of the Fresnel does have a chip. It is not terrible. It maybe a half inch. There is some rust and dents.The metal which holds the Fresnel in place is broken in one place. The burner is missing. The sliding door in the front of the font is missing. The rod which is to move up and down to open the door of the font is stuck. Lubrication is needed. There are flecks of a grayish substance on parts of the lantern. There had been some on the round lens. I was able to clean it off. I have not attempted to clean this off the red painted area. There are some areas of repair and repaint.

OUTER LANTERN
It measures 14" high. The diameter of the base is 9”.
INNER LANTERN/FONT
It measures 11" high. The handle adds an additional 2.5”. The handle is only up when one is removing it. Otherwise, it rests on its side. The diameter of the base is 8”.
Please remember, this is a vintage item and I have tried to describe it accurately, but it is sold as is.
