It is nice when art and functionality are mixed together, especially in the name of safety.

This type of lamp was produced in the 1950’s. It would be set on top of a television, turned on to produce deflecting light, thus saving peoples eyes from the potentially damaging glow of the television. That is typed for anyone that got to this eBay category by mistake.

This particular lamp shape is extra interesting as TV lamps go, because the eye of the horse has an opening that allows just a little light from the fixture in the back through to the front. you can see where the light would come through beneath the eye in one of the close-up photos, a little bit of blue background cloth showing through there.

The lamp is in great shape mechanically and cosmetically. There is a little chip in the opening on the back in the 9:00 position. Glaze color is a very dark brown with golden highlights for the eye, muzzle, and mane. There is a tiny chip in the gloss on the ear, but otherwise the finish  is nice and glossy all over.

The marks on the bottom of the lamp read:
CLAES
COPYRIGHT
W-> +
I am not sure what the "W->" shaped mark is all about, perhaps an artist. Please see the close-up photo.

The TV lamp weighs close to three pounds and measures:
10 ¾ height
11” muzzle to mane

Emails with questions or comments are welcomed, and we would be happy to send additional photographs.

Rather than “W->“, as listed in the title of this auction, the mark on the bottom is “WH”.

The full marks on the bottom of the lamp are:
CLAES
COPYRIGHT
c WH 54

Apparently, this is a “Claes Glowing-Eyed Mustang Head T-V Lamp“, designed by Leland Claes and produced by the William H. Hirsch Manufacturing Company in 1954.

The electric cord seems to be a replacement, but the light does work. The seller does not provide warranties or guarantees on any vintage light fixtures sold.

This auction has a very low starting price and no reserve. It can not be made available for a “Buy It Now” price. The auction will run full duration with the item sold to the highest bidder. International bidders are requested to contact the seller before placing a bid.

Thank you!
