UZBEK SILK HANDMADE EMBROIDERY - SURKHANDARYA SUZANI 

Suzanis, the fabulous embroidered cloths of Central Asia, are the world’s finest and the most beautiful pieces. The term “suzani”, which comes from the Farsi “suzan” for “needle”, is used only for large embroideries. These handmade Central Asian embroidery creations are the inheritors of ancient craft traditions. The production of a number of various embroideries of any forms and kinds, and for different functions - bride’s wedding dowry, belongings for horses and horsemen, the embellishment of reception areas - was an integral part of lifestyle of Central Asian people. Since their early age girls in the families of Central Asia have been taught the mastery of embroidering in order to follow the tradition to embroider their own wedding dowry. While embroidering of Suzani women express their cheerful mood and creativeness using their skills keeping the traditions and customs of the national applied art. Most of Suzani' motives carried symbolic meaning relating to fertility, protection, health and household stability. During the whole life the people of Central Asia have been enclosed by the decorative expressiveness and special significance of embroidered cloths at the national ceremonies and celebrations.


This item is Uzbek handmade embroidery - Surkhandarya Suzani. The embroidery was made in the 1970s. The Suzani was used initially as a wall cover. The foundation is cotton fabric of red color. It looks really attractive because of its nice and colourful pattern made in traditional Surkhandarya design. The pattern of the embroidery is composed of three big rosettes with multicolored flowers placed in separate sections. The border field is filled with blossoms and long branches. This Suzani makes delightful wall hanging, furniture throw, or even tablecloth!
