In the heart of a village at the foot of the Carpathians, among houses of dazzling whiteness standing out against the green background of mountain ash, beech and fir, outlined against the azure of the sky there rises a simple church whose walls are painted with all kinds of figures and scenes right up to the eaves of the shingle roof, pierced by a single tower at the eastern end.

This building is the church of the Voronet Monastery, one of foundations of Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldovia. Built in 1488, it was subsequently enriched during the reign of Petru Rares, Stephen the Great's son. It is not the only Moldavian church whose exterior is entirely covered with frescoes. In Northern Moldavia, the land of forests shelter similar monuments: Humor, Vatra Moldovitei, Arbora and Sucevita, all of whose outer walls are covered with frescoes painted with the same skill and also dating back to the 16th century.
