Ventifacts

Weld Co., Colorado

Ventifacts are rocks of all sizes that have been "wind-faced" or wind-faceted. They are natural rock sculptures that were created in the recent past when much of the Rocky Mountains were under hundreds or even thousands of feet of snow and ice. The ice formed glaciers that carved the beautiful U-shaped valleys, which are so admired in the Rocky Mountain National Park. The summer melt water formed braided streams that carried heavy loads of sand, silt, and larger rocks east from the mountain front. During colder times of the year the streams shrank and exposed vast plains of sand and gravel. Storms swept in from the West and down from the North and these winds blew and blew. There was very little vegetation on the shifting floodplains so the winds drove clouds of silt and sand before them. Over thousands of years this blowing sand was enough to shape and polish these beautiful natural stone carvings.

 

This ventifact has several weakly defined wind-faceted faces.  It was found in Weld County in northeastern Colorado. Most ventifacts in the northern U.S. formed during the Pleistocene when vegetation was sparse and wind-blown sand and silt was abundant.

 

6.5 cm X 8.5 cm X 3.5 cm (maximum measurement) Cube measures 1 cm for scale but is not included with the lot.

 

These larger stones will make really great paper weights or other desk decorations.
