This is an extraordinary button collection! They were collected by one woman from northern Michigan in the first half of the 20th century.
There are thousands attached to 86 full size cards, smaller cards and in bags and boxes. The buttons date from the civil war era up into the mid 20th century. They would be an excellent study collection for a museum or private collector.
The materials range includes ceramic, wood, glass, porcelain, metal, vegetal ivory, plastic, bakelite, jet, mother of pearl, celluloid, 14k yellow gold, sterling silver and fabric. They were manufactured in many different techniques including cut steel, pressed metal, twinkles, perfumes, carved, rhinestones, enamel, hand painted, molded glass, luster-gold and silver, composition, and even human hair.
Highlights include Japanese Satsuma, 14k gold and sterling silver, a full set of Spanish/American war National Guard buttons from each of the 46 states and 4 service branches, scrimshaw, and photo buttons of Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich. There are many other treasures throughout representing paperweights, Aesop’s fables, Remington, Waterbury set, military and work buttons and even a couple political buttons.
