c. 1893, Original Poster, for “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World,” also known as “The White Eagle,” with Professional Restorations, Choice Very Fine. This is an original, 9 color with metallic gold, Printed Poster, measuring 25” x 19.75” from the famous Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, known as “The White Eagle” which has been professionally restored. It was produced for the historic Colombian Exposition, which was held in 1893. This poster is listed as number 50 in Jack Leonard's reference book on Buffalo Bill posters. It is not a reproduction. We are informed that thousands of dollars and over two years were spent on the professional restoration work. As with many other Buffalo Bill posters, the original artist is not known to researchers. It was printed by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, with 9 colors, including metallic gold. The beautiful and exciting illustrated scene shows a mounted Buffalo Bill, rifle cradled in his arm, scouting the trail from atop a hill with a white eagle soaring above, seen flying over his shoulder. His horse is looking ahead and pawing its hoof, while in the background, a Westward wagon train is forming to move onward. The “Rough Riders of the World” in the title at the top indicates that this poster was made after Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders became famous in the Spanish American War of 1898, and a team of “Rough Riders” was added to the show that year. The subtitle at the bottom reads: “The White Eagle ‘Col. W. F. Cody - Buffalo Bill’ Guiding And Guarding.” Overall, this poster appears to be in excellent condition, with some minor lightly scattered creasing and fine hairlines. It is professionally matted and framed under glass to a larger size and is ready for hanging on display. Other examples of this valuable, original Buffalo Bill poster have sold at auction in excess of $20,000. This historic, beautiful work of art is an important piece of classic Americana. We do not know of another “White Eagle” poster to be offered in recent history. This great looking item is certain to attract the attention of serious Buffalo Bill and poster collectors.
