VICTORIAN
CHRISTMAS
FAIRY LAMP
THIS ONE IN A BEAUTIFUL
AMETHYST!!!
This is a beautiful antique Victorian Christmas lamp or also called a Fairy Lamp. This example is a gorgeous amethyst that measures approximately 4" tall, with a Diamond Quilted design. This fairy lamp is in good condition and, with this absolutely gorgeous color, would certainly make a lovely addition to someone's fairy lamp collection.
These lamps burned either a float lamp style wick or a short candle. Around the 1890's these lamps were hung outside during the holidays to welcome friends, or hung on the Christmas tree as decorations and lights. This example has a fired top opening so it is smooth to the touch. Once the lamp glass has cooled, the base was ground to that it was flat, and could sit on a flat surface also. This lamp has a groove on each side of the top ring to allow the hanger (either a wire or chain) to run up the sides and lay flat. The grooves also help hold the hangers or opposite sides which prevented the lamp from tipping. This lamp stands about 3-5/8 inches tall and is about 2-1/2 inches in diameter. The top opening is 2-1/8 inches in diameter. Some background information and identifications can be made at the Fairy Lamp Club website under the header of Christmas Lights and other related candle lamps at the following site: http://www.fairy-lamp.com There are no cracks or chips. This pre-electric light makes a perfect centerpiece when illuminated with a votive and surrounded by some holly or pine for the holidays. Its also great on a sunny window sill with the light streaming through it and is a most attractive color and shape. If you love these old lamps, check out my other lamps, and I will be listing more in the future.
Christmas candle lights, like the one shown in the photo, are called Victorian Illumination Lamps. They were popular during the Victorian era around the 1880's. They were hung on Christmas trees with wire handles. When the lights were lit with votive candles, the inverted diamond quilt design reflected the candle light making it look like a fairy with wings (similar to Tinkerbell in Peter Pan). Hence, the name Fairy Light was born. Most of these lights came from England, however, there were some made in America. The lights were also used during the celebration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee and the Coronation of Edward by hooking them onto a wire line creating a string of lights. Besides clear, the lights came in a variety of rich colors; cobalt blue, dark and light amber, purple, moss green, forest green, red, cranberry, and garnet.
No cracks. No maker's mark. Dates anywhere between 1850 – 1899.

***Important Feedback Changes as of 5/19/08: Buyers Take Care of Vintage Sellers on Ebay as many are leaving. Ebay recently made more changes to the feedback system that has reduced most Seller ratings, after many years of hard work building excellent feedback through honest ethical transactions. Instead of a score for all sales, Ebay now only figures the last 12 months. Likewise, Sellers are being scrutinized on their past 30 day DSR's, which is the 5 star rating Buyers, so please be accurate and honest when rating your Seller, especially those that work so hard to provide photo's, accurate descriptions, refund policy, communication throughout your transaction and ship within the time frame stated in their listing. Sellers have to meet a standard close to 5 stars to remain on Ebay. Always work out any problem with your Seller before leaving feedback, make sure to read their auction terms, payment and shipping terms and refund policy as communication is the key to great transactions. Unfortunately, many antique/collectible Sellers are leaving Ebay due to undeserved negative or neutral feedback.***
An example would be: (1) Buyer bids and does not pay for item then leaves negative feedback, (which Ebay should NOT allow but does). (2) Buyer leaves negative feedback upon receiving an item damaged in shipping. Again contact your Seller instead of punishing them for the shipper’s errors. All of our items are fully insured. (3) Buyer receives an item and he had higher expectations. Again, if you’re not happy, contact your Seller as many have refund policies as we do. It will indeed be a sad day when the antique, vintage and collectible Sellers leave Ebay, and Buyers again will have to buy from antique stores, some of which are high priced, in their own area instead of having the ability to look for these items on Ebay, from Sellers all over the world.*** (Clr Lamp w/"Crack")
