this is a rare old book titled In the Fog by Richard Harding Davis and beautifully illustrated by Thomas Mitchell Peirce and Frederic Dorr Steele who was an illustrator for many of the Sherlock Holmes stories. the book is hardback with gilt on the cover. IT has 155 pages and is dated 1901 br R H Russell. It only has the one date so I don't know if it is a first Edition or not. It is a series of three linked mystery stories by the noted journalist and novelist. this was his only mystery. the hardback has a little wear. there is a signature on the title page that looks like Sannes McPhetridge or Jannes. there was something glued to the front and back endpapers which may have been library envelopes but there is no library name or any stamps in the book. there are 15 of the original 16 plates . 3 have been pulled out but are still with the book and one has a small dog ear in one corner otherwise the plates are in good condition. the pages with text are all there . I found a few light smudges on a few pages but they are basically in good condition with a firm intact binding.
