In the 1800’s  one of the most useful and focused journals … was “Manufacturers and Builders” publication …

This wonderful publication was full of the practical advice a designer, architect, manufacturer, or builder of the time needed to succeed and to best serve their communities.

Most issues included home plans and layouts, great advice on practical issues related to design, building, manufacturing and wit and wisdom of the day.

Other sections, now mostly of historical interest … simply were surveys of the costs for materials that month so that a designer or builder could project trends and costs for their projects.

The home plans were simple, well thought out, and are even today, very useful and practical.

The lifestyle and financial and political advice is probably still as sound today as it was then, as are the admonishments not to make contracts while under the influence of alcohol or anger or pride, etc.

These publications are a wonderful respite from today’s glossy and technically elegant visual extravaganzas of color and design … that often deliver little real useful information or advice. Quite the opposite, these pages are filled with good advice, amusing stories, some historical  trivia, and most importantly, solid good tradecraft and plans that are as usable today as in the 1800’s.

Great for architects, engineers, or anyone needing nice old home / house plans, or needing to understand  the history of building in America … or perhaps to learn good tradecraft and design and concepts.

Return Policy
