Vintage 14K Gold & Amethyst Charm Locket Pendant

 This stunning charm/locket/pendant dates from the late 1960's.  But amethysts have a long history.  The ancient Egyptians used amethysts in their jewelry, and the ancient Greeks believed them to be protection against drunkenness.  This charm is marked 14 karat yellow gold, with a pear shaped light purple amethyst set in the center, and is surrounded by very delicate, heart-shaped filigree at the base, with fanciful, curling filigree and a rope band surrounding the prong-set amethyst.  There are no dents or dings or wear of any sort on this piece, it is ln mint condition.  The pendant measures 1-1/8" from top to bottom, 5/8" across, and approx 1/2" deep.  It opens on a hinge to display a shallow compartment which could be used to hold a photo, a needed medication, a lock of hair, any small thing which has meaning to you.  It is engraved in script on the back, "Love Jane 5-14-67", over a brushed gold finish.  If you wish, this engraving could be brushed out by a jeweler and replaced by an engraving of your choice, or no engraving at all.   I am not a jeweler, so I can't give you a carat weight of the amethyst, but it is between 1/2" and 5/8" in length, a large and lustrous stone.  This is truly a beautiful and well-crafted piece of jewelry, which would be a wonderful gift for yourself or any lady.  And amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February, so gift-giving time is getting near.  It has lain in a separate velvet-lined compartment of my jewelry box for over 40 years, just waiting for the right person to wear it - perhaps you?  I will ship free in the U.S., priority mail insured, in a golden gift box on the first business day after I receive cleared funds.   My feedback is 100%, and your satisfaction is my first priority.  Thank you for looking, and happy bidding.
