This is a super cool patio buffet cooker, kind of an early form of the Crock Pot. This one is made by West Bend, and consists of a ceramic clay pot which sets up top a chrome heating element. Comes with the original recipe book and a long AC power cord (cord not shown in photos).
Measures about 9 inches tall and 9 inches wide.
Recipes include chili and a variety of soups. The idea is that you can both cook and serve on your patio, or even indoors in your kitchen. The finish on the crock resists staining. The crock sets upon the chrome heating element, so you can remove it for washing or refilling. It does get warm, but is warmer near the bottom. I suggest removing the lid prior to serving so your guests don't have to touch the lid. Otherwise, you can unplug the unit and keep the lid on, the ceramic will keep the contents warm for quite awhile without the heat element powered on.
It is super cute and won't take up a lot of room on your picnic table nor your cabinets, and you can always refill it in the house. Another good use is to have it going for your family to serve themselves at dinner time if everyone is busy.
Excellent for rice and as a rice keeper. Can also be used to heat fondues or nacho cheese. It would be interesting to see how this would work as an oven substitute, whether heavier cakes or souffles could be made in this. Definitely could do an upside down pudding. A good alternative to using gas stove cooking as gas just keeps going up in cost.
