“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress, Dress impeccably and they remember the woman” attributed to
Coco Ch*nel
Adolfo Sardina was a Cuban national that immigrated to the
US in 1948. He commenced his career as an apprentice millinery designer at Bergdorf Goodman. He also did a stint in Paris in the early 1950’s as an apprentice for Cristobal Balenciaga as well as an unpaid apprenticeship for Coco Ch*nel.
After apprenticeship, he initially designed millinery as Adolfo of Emme (working for Emme Millinery) but opened his own salon in
New York in 1962. Earning a reputation in millinery, he later expanded into women’s custom clothing, menswear, scarves, and in 1978, licensed his name to a signature perfume. Adolfo closed his salon in 1993 to focus on additional licensing ventures. His design collections are housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York and the Smithsonian in
Washington,
DC.
This hat is believed to be from the late 1960’s durng his “Patchwork” period. Museum quality, this hat is a work of art. During this period, Adolfo even designed evening clothes in the patchwork design aesthetic to reflect the hippie/mod era influence on fashion.
By the early 1970’s, hats began to lose their luster in the fashion world. Adolfo changed with the times and concentrated his efforts on clothing design rather than millinery. Some of his devoted clientele included Nancy Reagan and the Duchess of Windsor.
You will turn heads walking down the street in this hat!
