Vintage 40# Detecto Scale White Cast Iron Parts Restore

This 40# capacity Detecto scale was found in a neighbor's barn and it's in rough cosmetic shape. Cracking and peeling white paint on cast iron, light surface rust, and dirty. Before taking pictures, all I did was give it a quick wiping off with a soft bristle hand broom. One side still has it's hand and glass. The other side is missing the hand, glass, and glass's bezel. You may be able to see in the main picture; the bulge at the base of the back-right basket holder, this is a repair weld. We couldn't find the basket that this would have needed. Research has lead me to believe the basket would have been made of brass. As-is, the scale reads 18#, 1 oz; this sounds about right for a large brass basket that would probably weigh 2# and zero out the reading. I put a 5# 1.5 oz object on the scale and got a reading of 5#, 6 oz which will likely become more accurate with cleaning and lubrication. Faceplate is marked “DETECTO SCALES INC. NEW YORK, N.Y. U.S.A. REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.” and “THIS TYPE DETECTO SCALE APPROVED BY THE DIRECTOR OF STANDARDS FOR MASS. APP'D. L-5 - N.Y.C. PENNA. ALA. N.C. CAPACITY 40 LBS. BY 1 OZ.” There is a place to mark the serial number but no number was ever put there. Overall, measures 17” long x 10” wide x 11.5” tall; 13# actual weight.
