Josiah Wedgwood was born into a family of potters on 12 July 1730, at Burslem, Staffordshire. His father's death in 1739 led him to an early start working as a 'thrower' in the pottery of his eldest brother, Thomas, to whom he was later apprenticed. An attack of smallpox seriously weakened Josiah, and in 1768 he had to have his right leg amputated. This meant he was forced to abandon throwing, but he subsequently gained a wider insight into the potter's craft - for example the work of the 'modeller' - and this encouraged his love of experimentation. Thomas refused Josiah a partnership in the business, so the younger man moved first to a small pottery run by John Harrison, then more happily to the firm of Thomas Wheildon of Fenton. From there, he opened works of his own, first at his cousin's Ivy House and later at the Brick House factory. At these works, Wedgwood made many models himself, and also prepared clay mixes. In June 1769, he opened a new factory at Etruria, near Stoke-on-Trent, in partnership with Thomas Bentley. Attached to the factory was a village where Wedgwood's workmen and their families could live in decent surroundings. Wedgwood greatly improved the clumsy ordinary crockery of the day, introducing durable, simple and regular wares. His cream coloured earthenware was christened 'Queen's Ware' after Queen Charlotte, who appointed him queen's potter in 1762. Other eminent patrons included Empress Catherine II of Russia, who ordered 952 such pieces in 1774. Wedgwood experimented with barium sulphate (caulk), and from it produced jasper, in 1773. Jasperware, which is used for a whole host of ornaments, blends metallic oxides, often blue, with separately moulded reliefs, generally white. Some such reliefs were designed for Wedgwood by John Flaxman. Other wares included black basaltes, frequently enhanced by 'encaustic' colours like red, to imitate Greek vases. Wedgwood was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1783, primarily for inventing the pyrometer to measure oven temperatures. He took a keen interest, too, in efficient factory organisation, and in improving the transport of raw materials and finished wares by canals, such as the Grand Trunk Canal, and by road. In 1780, when Wedgwood's long-term business partner died, he asked his friend Erasmus Darwin for help. Darwin's son would later marry Wedgwood's daughter, and they were the parents of Charles Darwin, the naturalist who formulated the theory of evolution. Charles would himself, in turn, marry a Wedgwood. When Wedgwood died on 3rd January 1795 he left a thriving business and a fortune to his children.

  • Vintage watches Back to Top
    About our Vintage Watches:
  • Any watch with a starting price of $500 or less has not been checked for timing accuracy, unless otherwise noted. Even though it runs it may keep time well or it may need servicing, you need to take this into consideration when bidding.
  • .We sell New, pre-owned, collectible and antique merchandise and art. All items not specified as being "new" may have indications of use or wear consistent with age, be sure to look at all the images in their enlarged form and all items are sold AS IS.
  • Any watch 20 years old or older may not meet the original factory specifications for water resistancy, and they should not be immersed or water damage may occur. .
  • Please look at all images in their enlarged format, as photographs tell as much or more about an item as the verbiage.

    Watch quality terms

To further explain our grading we offer the following definitions for our watch conditions we hope this clarifies the terms for the public and watch community.
  • Ultra Mint or New Old Stock (NOS) or New: Never sold to the public, may be virtually flawless but may show minor signs of shop wear from being placed in and out of showcase. If original box is present box may show dings or minor tears.
  • Mint or Like New: Excellent condition, like new may have been carried a few times and put away in safe deposit box or drawer. Box if present may show marring.
  • Minty or As New: Very Good to excellent condition, one the three of dial movement or case must being close to new condition. One (1) of the following (dial movement or case) may have minor imperfections such as faint hairlines, minor brass on stem area, minor screwdriver marks to movement or case back. But watch must run and look good. Box may or may not be present and may be in any condition.
  • Good (Not Minty): Runs, a good carrying watch may have some minor brassing of case, but dial and movement are presentable. A watch you would be proud to carry.
  • Fair (Far from Minty): May or may not run, very salvageable, will clean up nice with a standard cleaning and minor part replacement.
  • Poor (the anti Minty) Rough, good parts watch, may need heavy restoration to run correctly.
  • To Fix, 2 Fix, for Parts, 4 Parts _ This watch may or may not have all its parts and may or may not run. Expect it to only have only what is photographed and though it may tick when wound or rocked do not expect it to run. We have not defined a term for watches that are total junk and only used for parts, this term is kind of an enigma.

    Shipping information

  • We endeavor to have accurate shipping costs in each auction, please note the shipping costs listing in the Shipping section reflect professional packaging and clean packing material and generally double boxed.
  • eBay's shipping calculators do not accurately reflect dimensional weight of packages the proper shipping can be found in the shipping calculator in the auction. Check for accurate shipping quotes before you bid.

  • Shipping is calculated with eBay's shipping calculators, yes there is a modest handling fee.
  • When calculating your shipping please take note of the "estimated packaging size" in the auction, some items will be assessed a heavier weight by the USPS or UPS based on the exterior dimensions of the package. We double box and pack with bubble and peanuts so your item arrives safe and intact. This double boxing may increase the size of the package to reflect what seems to be greater shipping. Take the size of the package into consideration with your calculations.

  • We utilized third party coverage for shipped items (because of the limitations on declared value coverage for the type of items we sell) for UPS shipments of at least 0.75 per $100.00 and we highly recommend choosing the declared value coverage option.
  • If you choose not to purchase declared value coverage you are absolving Hess Fine Art and all entities of any liability if the item arrives damaged or fails to arrive.
  • Our 3rd party insurance for domestic USPS shipments ranges from $1.00 to $3.00 per $100.00 depending on item shipped and where shipped.
