I am glad to offer some beautiful example of one of
the best and most iconic designs of the 20th century
clothing.
BELSTAFF TRIALMASTER
"Everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to the Dalai Lama
wears Belstaff, a line of motorcycle jackets and accessories founded in 1924 in
Stoke-on-Trent, England, and bought a few years ago by an Italian bike
designer Franco. DiCaprio, whose Aviator jacket helped win Sandy Powell an Oscar
for costume design, isn't the only Hollywood star to buy in. Others include Tom
Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, George Clooney,
Matt Damon, Britney Spears and Ben Affleck.
Belstaff appears on and off the sets of flicks like I
am Legend,War of the Worlds, Ocean's Twelve and Batman Begins, just to name a
few.
And the cool list continues to grow. Angelina Jolie
called the London press office, Malenotti recalled on a pit stop in Montreal to
promote the brand. She wanted to pay for two jackets by credit card. "But we
said no, we'll give you the jackets,'' he said. He's also flooded with email
requests, he says without pretense: Madonna, Alicia Keyes, Jamie Foxx, the
Rolling Stones, U2, Coldplay ... I make him repeat the list, because I like the
way he says Madonna. As for the Dalai Lama, he's pictured in a jacket from the
"Free Tibet" collection, with proceeds going to the education of Tibetan refugee
children. The original garments, made by Harry Grosberg, were of waterproof
waxed cotton. Many are now leather. "It's a great product,'' says Malenotti, who
trained as a lawyer but takes care of the marketing for the brand. "You can't
buy these people,'' he says of the proliferation of stars wearing the jacket,
and, no, the company has not paid the Hollywood studios for product
placement."
These are jackets whose pedigree is beyond cool:
Lawrence of Arabia, Che Guevara, Howard Hughes and Marlon Brando wore them.
In vintage stores, these jackets sell for at least a
couple of thousands.
