Vintage Brass U.S. Cavalry Pin / Emblem on Horse Harness

Description: I wish I had the time to know more about some of this stuff - probably best that I don't, as I most likely would never get rid of anything! I'm not even sure what to call this...a pin, a button, a rosette? I'm pretty sure this is an eye guard that was originally part of a U.S. Cavalry horse harness. I do know it's an original item and very old. I tried matching it up to "like" tack items from WWI, but couldn't find anything with similar style letters - they all had the western "Rockwell" look to them (sorry, don't know what the official script is called). These letters are plain and narrow. I've been led to believe that they are more Civil War or Spanish American War era. I'm sure if you're bidding on the item, then I assume you know far more than I - so I'm trusting I have supplied enough photos to make up for my ignorance!   The brass emblem is fastened onto a double-layered 5" x 5" leather patch that is in turn sewn onto what appears to be the remains of the straps of a leather harness. The original metal buckle is still attached to the eye protector and partial strap. Please let me know if you have additional questions and I'll do my best to answer them!
