Vintage Burke Driving Iron
This is a Burke Golf Rite GR 1 driving iron with the famous Burke “thistle” and “scales of justice” cleek marks. This is likely a circa 1930’s – 40’s club, as Burke Golf Co. was a Newark, Ohio, club maker which sold many of its clubs via department stores in the Midwest during that time frame.
The wood shaft is in good condition, and the leather grip shows some wear, but looks good. Total length is 41 inches. The face is scored with 15 grooves that are 1 ¾ “ long. On both sides of the face grooves are a series of 3 dots (see picture).
On the back, engraved toward the heal is Burke’s famous thistle cleek mark. Toward the toe is another well-known Burke mark, the “scales of justice.” The club head shows some scuff marks on the bottom and on the hosel, and a few on the face, but all the markings are well preserved.
