Vintage English Silver Mfg Lg Chafing Dish, 1950s-60s
This was an estate find, thrown in a box, blackened with patina and forgotten. We took it home, gave it a good polish and look at the results.
Circa 1950s to 1960s, this chafing dish bottom was made by the English Silver Manufacturing Corporation out of Brooklyn, NY. It is marked with the letters MRR within a shield and to the right, a profile of an English gentleman. Under the MRR is the letter S. It is also marked "Made in USA".
The piece is quite large, measuring 8" tall with an inner diameter of 10". The glass insert and cover must have been lost along the way but this is still a very functional piece. Pyrex and other glass companies make several sizes of glass inserts, some in striking holiday colors. This gleaming silverplate piece with a rich cobalt blue or cranberry glass bowl would be striking on any holiday table or buffet.
As part of the stand, at the bottom, is the sterno or votive candle shelf to keep you items warm. Ornate handles and legs.
