Early and expressive Impressionist - Post Impressionist painting depicting a Paris scene, dated 1928.

The painting is done with oils on a wood panel, and is mounted in an Arts & Crafts gold painted frame. The painting measures 14.75" x 18.5" and the frame measures 20.25" x 23.5".

This piece is signed by the artist on the front, upper right:

8 - 4 - 1928 ... No. 2 ... T Souzouki

In addition there is a paper label on the back of the frame which reads,

DUNCAN, VAIL CO. ... ART DEALERS STATIONERS ... 732 SOUTH HILL STREET ... LOS ANGELES

(see photos).

This painting was likely done by a Japanese artist who moved to France to paint and study. There are a number of different spellings for this name and further research may discover a listing for the artist.

This painting depicts a busy Paris scene with people and cars in the foreground, and a large church in the background.

The painting is done in the Post-Impressionist manner with expressionist brushstrokes and is similar in style to the works of famous French artists, Antoine Blanchard and Edouard Cortes, as well as paintings from the early twentieth century 'School of Paris' group.

The palette is toned down, and the energetic quality of the brushwork brings the painting to life.

I do not know who the artist is, but there were many artist's from Japan who were working and studying in France at the same time. Two such painters were Ryozo Souzouki and Ruytchi Souzouki, whose works also show French influence.

Souzouki is an alternate spelling for the Japanese name Suzuki.

The Frame and painting are in good condition, as shown in the photographs, with a small area of touch-up to the tree.
