This beautiful, serious-looking medal was awarded to someone belonging to the DAUGHTERS OF HOLLAND DAMES, part of the Holland Society of New York. The group was founded in 1885 to collect information relating to the settlement and history of New Netherland and to promote genealogical research. To belong to the DHD you have to be lineally descended from Dutch ancestry. So this medal doesn't come easily.

It's cobalt blue enameled on heavy goldplate. The crown and lion with sword insignia is in relief. Hangs from a gold and blue ribbon. The entire piece measures 1 1/4 by 4 3/8 inches. The back of the medal is engraved with initials and No. 553. The medal has a secure rollover clasp on the back. Excellent condition.
