Authentic Yo Yo Doll from the late 40's early 50's, according to the daughter who was selling items from her mother's estate. The head is made from a stocking like material with hand embroidered clown face. It has rust colored, frizzed yarn hair on each side of its face. Measuring approximately 8" tall, it is approximately 5" at its widest point.
Yo Yo dolls were first made in the middle 1800's from scraps that quilters had left over. The scraps were cut into circles that were gathered at the center and then threaded together. The head was made first, many times out of an old stocking and was embrodiered or embelished with buttons to create a face. Circles ( yo yo's) were then threaded to make part of the body from the neck. The arms and legs were then tied into the main body. Yo Yo dolls tell a story in the fabric that was used. You can see history in the remants. Later plastic faces and kits were sold to make yo yos. The dolls are still made today.
This little clown has a gray and green/white yarn ball on his right side to form a hand and foot. On his left side, the yarn balls are pink and a dark blue. He is a little worn, which is not unexpected for his age. Overall, he is in good condition.
Because I am downsizing, I am looking for homes for some of the treasures that I have gathered over the years. I really think this American hand crafted doll is one.
I have tried to describe this little guy correctly and completely. Should you have any question, please email me. Thanks for looking.
