The sleeves and back of this jacket are a very nice example of the older style of ikat weaving. Ikat is an intricate process of dying either warp or weft threads, sometimes both, before they are used to weave the fabric. Ikat is an ancient style of weaving that goes back to pre-Columbian time in Central and South American cultures.
The subtle color changes in this example of work are impressive. From a distance the fabric looks to be of one type of a more solid design. With every step closer, the design and pattern become more complex and complicated until it looks like something else entirely. Something very fine and delicate. I have always been amazed at how these beautiful weavers could keep tract of all those hundreds, maybe thousands of strands of all those colors and consistently reproduce so many intricate patterns over and over again from memory.
Next, on the two front panels of this jacket we have some amazing and brilliant embroidery made of only some of the colors in the ikat weaving that makes up the body of this jacket. These colors include fuchsia, shades reds, oranges, purples, blues, greens, yellows and cream, on beautiful old velvet. You know, the kind of velvet that is so soft no matter what direction you pet it. Again, interesting and beautiful, colorful and just plain outstanding.
This jacket fits into the funky and fun department. This an older vintage zip jacket with elastic at the bottom of the body and at the cuffs of the sleeves. The zipper works perfectly. There are two slash pockets in front. The jacket is lined in black. There are no holes or worn spots in any of the fabrics in this piece. No holes in the pockets. The velvet is in excellent condition. The embroidery is in amazing condition as well. There are a few places in the embroidery that have been snagged a little bit here and there over the years, but no apparent problems with it. This item must be dried cleaned. Machine or possible even hand washing may be too hard on the fabric. The colors in the weaving are rather unusual, mainly shades of oranges and purples, with just so many other colors as accent. The ikat pattern is gorgeous. So intricate. So complex. It's hard to imagine how it is even done. Remember, the threads are dyed before the material is woven. You'll just have to see for yourself.
The jacket, the fabric, the color, the embroidery, the lining, the zipper, the elastic in the cuff of the sleeves and at the bottom of the jacket appear to be all in great condition. This jacket is absolutely wearable and ready to go. This jacket is perfect to wear pretty much all the time. Even in the summer in the evening or night, and during the winter with a nice warm sweater underneath.
I have
recently purchased several lots from several estate sales, my favorite
special secret source, as well as from many other sources and have
combined them with inventory I already have.
Although most of my inventory comes from estate sales and my special
secret source, I occasionally purchase a few lots of vintage jewelry on
eBay as well. More importantly, I have finally been able to catch up
on unpacking and somewhat organizing these items. I am now able to
start listing from all these different venues: beautiful furs, beaded
and sequined jackets and gowns, a mint red leather 60's mod coat, more
coats, jackets, dresses, shirts, blouses, pants and skirts, some great
60's clothing and vintage as well as designer as well as vintage
designer clothing and accessories. And, of course, more vintage
jewelry. Check in with me regularly because I'm going to town with
this stuff.
