Item specifics
Type: Apple SystemsModel: Macintosh LC580

You are bidding on one of the less common Macintosh computers:  An LC580 with Ethernet.  Fully tested and working.

Getting into some of the more unusual Macs from my collection now.  The LC/Performa 5xx series of all-in-one Macintoshes went back to Apple's original  groundbreaking concept of bundling the entire computer including the monitor into one unit.  But this time the monitor was in color and instead of having a postage stamp screen like the Color Classic, these LC's  had big color screens.  There were a whole series of LC5xx computers (also sometimes branded as Performa 5xx computers depending on where they were sold).

The LC580 is similar to the other 5xx machines, but with two important differences:  (1)  The LC 580 has a communications slot, so it can accept an Ethernet card without using its LC expansion slot.  This allows the LC 580 to hold both an Ethernet card and an expansion card at the same time.  (2) The LC580 was designed to work with video input and output cards.  Using the "MacTV" cards, for example, the LC580 can be used to view or output video.  The LC580 was the only 5xx machine that could do this.  See photo 5 for a picture of the logic board showing these slots.

The LC 580 also has the distinction of being the last all-in-one Macintosh to use one of the Motorola 68000 series CPUs that powered Apple's rise.  The LC580 was only on the market for about four months before being replaced by PowerPC-based systems.  Few were sold, so they are rare today.  (This particular LC 580 is even rarer:  It is one of the very few produced without a built-in CD-ROM drive.)

To learn more about the Macintosh LC/Performa series including the 580, cut and paste the following links into your browser and take a look:

This particular Macintosh LC580 is in excellent cosmetic condition (see first four photos).  The case has no cracks, gouges, or other injuries.

This computer has 16 megabytes of RAM, a 500Mbyte IDE hard drive, and a high density floppy drive.  It boots up System 7.5 from the hard drive when the power key is pressed on the keyboard (photo 6).  The screen is bright and sharp (see the screen photos).  The bands and moire patterns you see in some photos are artifacts of my digital camera.  You will not see these when you use this computer.  The hard disk includes several application programs.

I ran the complete set of Apple hardware diagnostics on this LC580 and the machine passed them all (see photo 7).  I also tested the external SCSI connection, and it too is working properly.  I replaced the clock backup battery with a new one:  The date and time are maintained even without power.  It's very easy to replace the clock battery again should you ever need to.  The LC/Performa series are the easiest Macs to get into to replace batteries, upgrade RAM, add options etc.

The best thing about this LC 580, however, is that it comes with a rare Asante Ethernet card.  This card (which fits any Mac with a CS1 slot) allows Ethernet connection.  I tested the Ethernet connection on this machine by printing a file to my networked Laserprinter.   This worked correctly (see photos 8 and 9).  Incidentally, the "3" key on the keyboard is not sticking:  I was testing a different keyboard.

This LC 580 also includes an Apple compact keyboard and an teardrop mouse.

On request I will send the auction winner at no charge a PDF e-mail attachment containing the official Apple service manual for the LC 580.  Hard to find and very useful.

I used to collect Macs, but have moved into a much smaller house and shop.  See my other auctions over the coming months for vintage Macs ranging from the original 128K Mac through SE/30's to exotic Macs and Mac peripherals, plus occasional other vintage computing items.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

I don't have a lot of silly rules and hoops for buyers: Pay for your item and I'll send it you. I've been a buyer and a seller on eBay for ten years and have a near perfect feedback record. I'll trust you and you can trust me to do right.

Please use the eBay shipping calculator to figure your shipping cost.  I have shipped vintage Macs all over the world safely, and your LC 580 will be packed with care and respect.  Please note that the shipping box is large (22 inches by 20 inches by 20 inches) and weighs nearly 50 pounds.  That's why shipping is expensive.  Delivery along the I-5 corridor from Eugene, Oregon to Olympia, Washington is available for a nominal $10.   Free local pickup in Bend, Oregon is also available.

Shipping insurance is provided to protect both of us.  Due to the delicate nature of vintage computers this machine is not returnable.

Foreign bidders:  The shipping box for this system measures about 102 inches (length plus girth).  This exceeds the maximum allowable size for International Priority Mail to most countries from the United States.  If you wish to bid, please contact me first to confirm that this package can be shipped to your country or to a US address.  If it can, I will authorize your eBay signon to bid.  Thank you for your understanding.
