Bidding has ended on this item. Item:Vintage Mini Splint Ash Pack Basket w/ Sweetgrass Rim |
Up for auction is a beautifully woven little splint ash pack basket. It is a diminutive version of the classic large trapper's baskets of the frontier era, and even has the potbelly construction of the originals. The basket features a bentwood ash carrying handle and splint ash construction. The rim is made of sweetgrass. It comes with a handwritten note, stating that this is of Iroquois origin, and I am thinking this is correct. Certainly the sweetgrass rim is a hallmark of NE Native American weaving. This basket is an excellent example of a recent-vintage American folk art piece, and it will make a terrific addition to someone's collection.
The basket, as noted, is a small one, just larger than I would call a miniature, measuring 2" x 1¾" across at the base, and 3" deep. This basket is in just pristine condition with no breaks or any damage. The rim, splints, and handle are all in perfect shape. This nicely woven little pack basket makes a terrific piece for display, and its small size is quite appealing and unusual.
Additional Notes: I will be happy to provide discounted shipping for multiple purchases. Please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions, and please take a look at my other auctions I'm listing today for more old baskets.
