Item specifics
Era: 1900-Now

This auction is for a vintage handmade bow and three arrows from New Guinea.  These were made and used by the natives in west New Guinea, an area known as Irian Jaya.  The bow is said to be made out of Black Palm wood, the arrow shafts are bamboo and the tips are made or some other type of wood and then joined to the bamboo shafts.  One of these arrows is carved with a series of spiral of ridges that serve as barbs, one is smooth and very pointed and sharp, one is a wide section of bamboo that has been cut and sharpened to resemble a knife blade and one has multiple points that are joined at the arrow shaft with a tightly wound reed, this one is probably for hunting for fish or water mammal (see photos).  Even the bow string is made of a reed, possibly some kind of palm.  These are all hand made by the tribes that lived in the region near the city of Manokwari.  These are part of a large collection that I bought from the estate of a world traveler.  His family told me that his work had taken him to New Guinea on several trips over a number of years and he had collected lots of interesting native artifacts.  See my other auctions for more.  There are way too many things to put on all at once so I will be offering them for sale on Ebay over the next few weeks so check back from time to time.
