Up for auction is a small sized round woven splint ash and sweetgrass Indian basket with sweetgrass rims and weaves. This is a nicely woven little lidded basket made by one of the Northern Woodlands Indian tribes, and would have been designed to hold a tourist lady's buttons, needles, or other small sewing notions. The weavers used finely split strands of sweetgrass over an ash framework and finished the basket off with sweetgrass rims bound with ash. The rounded lid has a little ash ring handle bound with ash. The body of the basket is covered with row upon row of finely split sweetgrass interspaced with narrow ash splints. Although the pretty dyes are now mostly visible only on the inside and base of the basket, the splints have developed a lovely aged patina with the passage of the years. A beautiful and well-made little Indian basket!
The basket, as noted, is a nice small size and finely woven. It measures 3" in diameter at the rim and 2½" deep to the top of its rounded lid, with the handle adding another inch or so. This beautiful basket is in near-perfect condition. In fact, the basket is in great shape with no breaks or damage at all. I have taken photos of all sides so you can see. This is an attractive, genuine, older Native American basket and will make a terrific addition to someone's collection.
