Very unusual early french horn that would be great for display
I have no idea what kind of french horn this might be
It has a few dents visible in the picture
There are six large dents that measure up to no more than 1 "
There is one at the mouthpiece holder
There are about 10 very small dings
The two slides come out and could use a nice oiling
Unfortunately the keys are solid type I believe a cheaper version as opposed to mother of pearl keys
When pressed the keys return easily
Stamped into caps are the numbers 13, 14, 15
There is no mouthpiece, but I do have a new 12C I will send
The horn measures 16" from bottom of bell shape to the keys
It also measures 17".mouthpiece to edge of bell shape
The silver nickel finish is in excellent condition, no brass showing.
I could not find any information on the maker Jerome & Co. except the following: Richards, J.G. Co. [Catalog.] Cleveland, OH: J.G. Richards Co.; [1880?, n.p.] Appears to be a general catalog, offering violins, boxwood clarinets, [etc. ?]. Private collection

On May-24-08 at 12:56:46 PDT, seller added the following information:I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENT I THOUGHT THIS WAS A FRENCH HORN. IT IS NOT A FRENCH HORN ACCORDING TO A VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE EBAYER. HE SAID THAT THIS IS ACTUALLY A MELLOPHONE AND THAT IT IS AN OBSOLETE INSTRUMENT FROM LATE 1800'S TO EARLY 1900'S AND IS NOT USED ANYMORE BECAUSE OF THE SOUND THAT COMES OUT OF IT IS NOT DESIRABLE. I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE IT LOOKED NEAT. IN MY DESCRIPTION I DID STATE THAT THIS WOULD BE GOOD FOR DISPLAY AS I DID NOT KNOW IF IT WAS PLAYABLE, SO PLEASE BID ACCORDINGLY. SORRY IF THERE WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING ON THE DESCRIPTION AS BEING A FRENCH HORN BUT IT DOES LOOK LIKE ONE TO ME (SMILE).
