This interesting aqua trap measures 5 7/8" by 4 1/4". It features a thin lip, embossed circle on shoulder and some great whittle/texture to the glass surface. It is in near mint condition with a few light scratches, otherwise perfect. This is the last one of this shape we have left.

Some Facts About Vintage Glass Fly Traps

These simple devices are one of the more unusual items from yesteryear to be fashioned from glass. When baited with sugar water or wine they attract insects which enter through the opening at the base and are funneled into the trap where they are unable to escape as they stubbornly fly against the glass sides, or simply gorge until they can fly no more and fall into the liquid and expire.
They are durable and quite functional as environmentally safe solutions to insect control. Gardens and patios are perfect venues for utilizing the traps to control populations of pesky flies and stinging bugs such as bees and wasps, while at the same time stimulating the curiosity of all who notice them.
Most vintage fly traps (there are many reproductions around) were blown in clear glass which makes for a dull display. Because of this factor, we specialize in the more scarce, and consequently more valuable, traps in colors other than clear. We do occasionally offer clear traps but those are most often free blown, table top designs which are even more rare than the hanging styles and therefore desirable in clear as in color.
The table top traps were completely hand blown (there are some exceptions) with hand finished features like tooled trap entry openings, applied glass feet and hand laid string rims which were applied to the neck for strengthening. They were used in well-to-do homes, often on the dinner table where they were covered with a cloth at meal time. They were also commonly utilized in hospital wards and sick rooms to fight the spread of contagious disease by controlling the population of disease carrying flying insects.
The majority of hanging style traps were blown in early semi or fully automatic bottle machines (some early examples were hand blown) and were used primarily to battle infestations of fruit flies in continental Europe during the early part of the 20th century.
Many vintage fly traps have light to heavy haze (or "sick") obscuring the glass. This can be a result of long-term moisture exposure from liquid baiting or ground burial. Sellers of fly traps often fail to indicate the level of haze in the descriptions. This information is important because haze effects the display quality, particularly on lightly colored or clear traps. It is a condition factor just like a chip and therefore the buyer should be advised when haze is present. For this reason we always describe in detail the status of haze in our vintage glass offerings. We are proud to declare that the trap in this listing is stipulated to be free of any haze.

Glass fly traps are hard to beat as conversation pieces, make great "green" solutions to insect control and are smart investments as well. You'll be able to buy reproductions forever, but there were only a limited number of originals made. Get yours now while they are still available for a song compared to other antiques and collectibles. If you don't, in a decade or few you may find yourself looking back and lamenting "I can remember when you could get those on eBay for under 100 bucks!"
