Vintage Ornate Repousse Brides Basket, Fruit
The maker of this beautifully ornate repousse bride's basket remains a mystery. It was literally black with patina and we spent considerable time polishing. The mark, if there is one, must be hidden in one of the crevices. This is an estate find and we were told that this was turn of the century to about 1920.
The design is repousse, a technique usually used on metal where patterns are formed in relief by hammering and pressing on the reverse side. This is a heavy design of fruits and flowers. It sits on a 1 3/4" pedestal and has a diameter of 11 1/2".
It is still a really beautiful piece but there are some spots of silverplate loss in the bottom center of the basket. I have taken close ups for your review. Very different from most bride's baskets that we have seen. Certainly a gorgeous display item.
