Bidding has ended on this item. Item:Vintage Papago Indian Basket w/ Fancy Ocher Maze Design |
Up for auction is a lovely, quite large, and beautifully crafted coiled Papago Indian basket. These were more commonly woven in a dark brown pattern on a natural background, but the weaver of this basket used a less common shade of ocher yellow to highlight the natural background of her creation. Although I do not have the original tag, I was given the weaver's name of "Selena Cruz." This "Man in the Maze" design is a classic Native American design from the Papago tribe, and portrays the many choices that a person must make in his lifetime. Notice the attractive round shape this basket has, the smooth finished rim, and the symmetrical coiling. The rim end is carefully tapered and finished off. This is an outstanding example of Papago handiwork.
The basket, as noted is quite a large one for one of these coiled Papago baskets, measuring 11¾" in diameter and with a shallow bowl shape, about 1½" deep. This nice basket is in pristine condition, with no breaks, missing wraps, stains, or any damage whatever. See photos, as they give a true picture of its condition. This is a lovely example of innovative Native American weaving and will make a beautiful addition to someone's collection of vintage Southwest Indian baskets.
