Vintage Striped Square-to-Round Splint Oak Egg Basket

Up for auction is a beautifully woven medium sized splint oak basket with a bentwood handle and fine and even weaves. It was probably intended to be used as a berry basket or egg basket. The basket has a nice tapered square base morphing to a round rim, and an attractive symmetrical shape. Look how the weaver tapered every single oak splint as it graduates from the base to the sides, so that there are no gaps in the weave on the base. Also, be sure to notice the whittled bentwood handle carved and notched to fit over the rim. The narrow oak weavers on the sides were dyed a subtle striped pattern in natural dyes in brown and black earthtone colors. Ther basket also has a nice patina, which will continue to deepen over time. This beautiful and well-crafted basket makes a terrific piece for display.

The basket, as noted, is of a nice medium size, perfect for display, measuring 7" square at the base and 5½" deep - 9½" tall to the top of the handle. Very symmetrical proportions! This beautiful basket is in pristine condition, with no breaks or other damage. The handle is perfect as is the base, and all the double-lashed rim wraps are intact. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's condition. This is a very nice basket and will make an outstanding addition to someone's collection.
