THIS IS AN OLD VETINARIAN MEDICAL INSTRUMENT FOR HOLDING A HORSE'S MOUTH OPEN FOR TEETH EXTRACTION OR PROCEDURES ON A HORSE'S TEETH.
I got this from a neighbor down the road who is an old retired Veterinarian. He had this old surgical tool and he told me what it was used for (as described above).
It is very sturdy and is still a bit shiny. It is chrome-plated steel and has a black handle with tiny rivets on both sides with the steel running down the middle of it. It measures about 23-3/4" long. The opening of the round oval part measures about 4-3/4".
It unscrews in the middle of the long shaft which was in order to make it easier for transporting such items when they were traveling to farms, etc.
There is a very tiny area along the inside of the oval where the plating has come off.
