Up for auction is this beautiful Yamaha Dynamic No. 20 Guitar. This Red and White Label Dynamic was made in 1962 at the famous Nippon Gakki Instrument factory, almost 10 years before they started bringing out their popular Red Label FG-180s. Yamaha produced these Dynamics from the mid 50's to the late 60's, releasing over 20 models. The Japanese domestic release Red and White label, along with the original Black label are considered the best of them. Other lines were made for the export market, such as the S range (S-50 etc) which were laminate bodies, but few were sold overseas. Yamaha Dynamic guitars are rare outside of Japan, particularly one of this age and in amazing condition. In my opinion, they are like undiscovered treasure in the vintage guitar world - they are practically unknown, quite a different and unique guitar, but of amazingly high quality. Solid bodied and expertly crafted, they are roughly the same size as a classical guitar, but the metal rods that the strings wind onto allow you to choose between steel and nylon strings. I've always used steel strings on them - the tone is unique, very different from a dreadnought, 000 or most other acoustics. Google Yamaha Dyanmic and you'll see that the few people in the western world who have one love and rave about them! They are my personal favourite out of the whole Yamaha family - I just love the tone and they are such a nice looking, and well built guitar. They are starting to become more popular as the vintage Japanese market picks up, and this one, particular in its amazing condition will make a wise investment as well as a beautiful looking and sounding guitar.
- Completely original and structurally sound - no cracks or splits, bridge is stable with no floating. The neck is reasonably straight, the fretboard is perfect and the frets have basically no wear. The binding and heel joint are stable, tuners work well.
- Excellent cosmetic condition - 9/10. Apart from the photographed marks, there are very few other blemishes.
The front and the sides are amazingly clean, the back has a few tiny nick and light scratches, and there a few bumps and tiny nicks on the bottom. Quite unbelievable considering this guitar is almost 50 years old. It may have spent a fair part of its life in it's case. The tuners are rust free, the headstock is in beautiful condition (except for a few marks on the top) and the Yamaha lettering on the headstock is flawless, I've never seen better! The label isn't faded and the binding and the inlay around the soundhole are beautiful. There is a fair bit of crazing or finish checking on the back, and a small amount on the back of the neck and the headstock. This isn't any kind of structural problem or damage, just what naturally happens with old guitars. The true sign of a vintage guitar! Theres lots of info online about it if you want to check out why it happens etc. The finish on the front and sides is shiny as and spruce top looks amazing! The photographs speak for themselves.
- The tone is this guitars winning feature - thanks to it's age, solid body and how the woods have dried over time. Mellow, warm but still very resonant and rich with excellent bass response
and sustain. The maple back and sides give nice, clear high tones as well. As the name suggest, they very dynamic and responsive guitars. With its chunky and short neck its best suited to folk and fingerpicking styles, along with gyspy jazz type stuff. Also really great mellow tone suits finger strumming. Not really a lead/shredding type thing though!
- Solid woods throughout, Spruce top and Maple back and sides. Not sure about the neck, but I think it may be Mahogany. The spruce is straight and tightly grained, with a few little shimmery bear claw spots.
- Comes with what I believe to be the original case - all the ones I've had came in the same case. Its is in excellent cosmetic condition as well, but one of the latches in missing. Serial # 248426
