All I can say is OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! Women of China, before 1911 when it was finally outlawed, girls would bind their feet to keep them from growing. This was considered a symbol of status. Of course they could hardly walk as they became older. Thank goodness it was outlawed. These little shoes, or I call slippers, are 5 3/4" long. They are made of a very pale lavender silk that has beautiful hand embroidery. The front has two playful kittens, sides are floral designs and the backs have the neatest crickets in light green with long legs of maroon. Please see my pictures for a close look. The soles are leather and you can see they have been worn. I wonder what the girl was like who wore these, and what became of her. When I pick these up I almost feel a kinship with the person. The dear person who must have felt great pain just for status.
